Dear UNITY,As the recipient of the 2011 UNITY scholarship, I was able to attend Chicago National Association of Dance Master’s 2011 Teacher Training School. Had I not received the scholarship, I would not have been able to financially afford to attend this past year. CNADM is always an inspirational and educational experience, and this past summer was exceptionally so once again. From Matt Farmer’s modern classes, I took away new ideas of how to approach teaching modern dance techniques, especially to beginning students. Meeting both Arthur Duncan and Brenda Buffalino was not only an experience I’ll never forget, but a tool for me to gain a better understanding of the history of tap dance and how it developed in each era. I’ve used much of what I learned from Duncan and Buffalino’s tap classes at training school throughout the last several months with my own students. The way Ricardo Moyano explained the transfer of weight and the placement of the body during his ballet classes at training school, was an “ah ha” moment for me. He explained it in a different way than I usually do with me students; a way that was more effective and easier for the students to understand. I’ve been using his method since training school last July, and it has helped my students out tremendously.
I have tried other professional organizations in the past, but CNADM is by far the best organized and most educational dance teacher program around. I walk away gaining so much knowledge year and after year, and would not be the teacher I am today without this organization. Thank you for providing me with the funds to attend this past July. This past year was one of the roughest years of my life, and some of the hardest times I’ve ever gone through, and being able to get away and be inspired and feel passion again for my dance career was a greater gift than I could ever express in words.
